University of Cyprus - Department of Computer Science

The University of Cyprus is the main academic institution of the Republic of Cyprus. It is a large sized higher education institution which aspires to establish itself as a research-oriented institution that combines research with teaching in order to promote knowledge and educate highly qualified specialists and professionals.

The Department of Computer Science has a full-time staff of 19 faculty members, over 40 full-time researchers and visiting staff, and over 450 undergraduate and graduate students. The Department is research-oriented, active in several areas of information technology and communications including: computer graphics and VR, medical informatics and telemedicine, artificial neural networks and genetic algorithms, knowledge representation, electronic commerce, computational logic, high-speed networks, knowledge engineering, mobile computing, multimedia, parallel algorithms and architectures, signal and image processing. Over the last 5 years members of the department have attracted more than 80 funded research projects from both local and European funding sources.

The current project involves the Graphics and VR Lab (VRL) of the CS Department. The lab has its own VR infrastructure with a power wall, a multi-touch table and head mounted displays. It has coordinated or been involved in several related research projects such as FP5 IST funded: CREATE, INTUITION Network of Excellence; Cyprus RPF funded: REALSIMOS, KIKIPEZ, TONEMAP, SCOLIOSIS; EU Euromed funded: NAVSAV. VRL has already developed in Cyprus applications and installations for the public benefit, for training and culture heritage purposes. The international standing of the VRL can also be seen from the fact that it's been trusted to organize prestigious international conferences and seminars such as EGSR06, ANS06, VRST06, ECMS08.
